Travel Insurance and International Health
Have you ever been on vacation and had to return home because of an emergency or illness? Has the airline of hotel ever lost your luggage? This happens often and most of the time the consumer is without travel insurance. Travel insurance can provide the extra protection you need when traveling.
Before you finalize your travel plans, consider purchasing travel insurance. There are circumstances that could cause you to cancel your trip, return home early, seek emergency medical treatment or purchase new clothing due to loss of luggage. Check your homeowners and medical insurance before purchasing travel insurance to avoid overlapping of coverage. For example your camcorder may be under your homeowners policy. Or, if you become sick or injured while on vacation, your medical insurance may cover medical treatment.
Different types of travel insurance
- Trip cancellation/interruption: If your plans suddenly change and you have to cancel or end your trip early, trip cancellation/interruption coverage will reimburse you if the reason is on the acceptable list. For example injury, sickness and death. Some policies will only cover medical reasons and some will not cover pre-existing medical conditions.
- Emergency medical evaluation: This travel insurance coverage is a good idea if you are not going to be near a modern medical facility. If treatment were not available at the local hospital, you would be transferred to the nearest hospital that can offer treatment.
- Baggage loss: This coverage reimburses you for the loss, damage or theft of your bags.
When purchasing travel insurance, read the fine print. Make sure the travel insurance you choose has the coverage to fit your needs.
