Student health insurance
Many health insurance policies today provide coverage for your college student until they either graduate college or until a certain age. But what about the college students that are no longer covered? They may no longer be covered under a parent’s insurance policy or their school is outside the HMO or PPO region. This is where student health insurance is a good idea.
Active students are at higher risk for injury, and a virus can sweep through a college dorm in no time at all. Fortunately student health insurance is very affordable for a college student on a budget.
A traditional insurance company may offer student health insurance, which would offer more coverage but at a higher premium. Or the school may offer a standard college student package. Most schools do offer this, which is good because the premium is less but so is the coverage.
A student health insurance policy may be better suited for a college student over an individual insurance plan for the following reasons:
- Lower premiums.
-
Reasonable deductibles.
-
Most travel with the student if they change schools.
-
Usually cover the student year round.
-
Students can choose the plan that fits their need.
-
Students can choose their own doctors.
-
Prescriptions are usually covered.
limitations to student health insurance:
- No dental or vision.
-
Routine exams are not covered.
-
No preventative care.
-
Usually no birth control.
Every student health insurance policy is different. Most college’s today do require students to have some sort of health insurance policy.
